How to Integrate your WordPress posts into Facebook and Twitter

Once you’ve got your blog up and running, you might want to broadcast your website posts to your social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to gain visibility and page views. It’s a great way to reach out to a different audience who prefers social networking vs. receiving an e-newsletter, and enables you to share your posts through “retweets” or “Likes” thereby increasing your web popularity for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) purposes.

The first thing you should understand is the difference between installing an app through the social media platform or installing a plugin through WordPress. Apps tend to be more reliable than WordPress plugins for this particular purpose because as Facebook/Twitter change their systems over time, WordPress plugins often become outdated, break, or the vendor no longer keeps them up-to-date. In other words, if you use an app implemented through Facebook/Twitter, those platforms will keep themselves up-to-date without having to upgrade anything yourself within WordPress.

Another thing you should know is that a lot of these apps require a feed URL which most blogs automatically have. The feed URL for WordPress is simply your blog URL with /feed/ tacked on to the end. For instance, Evolv’s blog feed URL is /feed/.

Publishing to Multiple Social Networks is an standalone app that pulls content from your blog feed and intelligently formats and delivers it to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and many more social networks. They have a nice search and replace feature but mostly provide a wealth of analytics that will hook up with any external analytics system (ie. Google Analytics, Omniture). Their analytics provides valuable statistics like information on the most popular posts, demographic profiles of your audience, keyword and topic analysis, and even tracks audience behavior and most popular audience engagement times. Social is a lightweight WordPress plugin created by MailChimp, a very reliable vendor you can trust to keep updated. It integrates your posts with Twitter and Facebook only but its highlight is that it aggregates the various mentions, retweets, @replies, comments and responses and republishes them as WordPress comments. It also allows you to customize your broadcast messages to each social account so they don’t all look the same, allows your visitors to sign in as their Facebook or Twitter identities to leave a comment, and even filters the comments by originating source (Facebook, Twitter, or your blog as comments). Publishing to Facebook Only

The quickest and easiest to use Facebook app is RSS Graffiti and their Getting Started Guide can get you started in just minutes.

Another option that comes highly recommended is the Facebook app called NetworkedBlogs, but we find this one quite confusing to set up, hard to use, and the rate at which the posts are updated on Facebook depends upon how many NetworkedBlogs followers you have. However, what makes this app different is that you end up with a Blog tab on your Facebook page that shows all your posts in addition to posting to your timeline and on NetworkedBlogs website directory.

Suggestions for Posting to your Social Network

Be careful not to over-saturate your readers with duplicate content. Pushing your posts to Facebook and Twitter is great, but don’t additionally set your Facebook posts or tweets to show up on WordPress. Also, being able to customize your posts for each social network is nice because it doesn’t duplicate the content on all sources.
