What are long tail keywords?
Long tail keywords are keyword phrases made up of 3-5 words that are extremely specific to whatever you are selling. They are different from “head” terms that are shorter more general keywords and therefore less popular, but they come with less competition and more targeted traffic. An example of a normal keyword head term would be “website optimization” while a long tail keyword would be “how to optimize my website for search engines”. Long tail keywords come in handy when writing blog posts on a monthly basis to help pull in more web traffic.
Research long tail keywords:
Objective: Find a keyword with low search volume, low competition, and high authority.
- Search Volume is the monthly average a keyword/phrase is searched in Google.
- Competition is the amount of websites competing for a particular keyword/phrase in Google.
- Site authority is a score based on 40+ metrics that impact the ability of a website to rank in search results.
- Come up with ideas. Ask yourself:
- What is the job of your website?
- What are you services or products?
- What do you do better than anyone else?
- What are you passionate about?
- What topics will lead to conversions on your site?
- Use keywordtool.io to discover what questions people have about a particular topic. This will help identify your “valuable topic.”
- You can also do a keyword search in Google and scroll to the bottom of the page results to find the section labeled “Searches related to…” This lists some great options too.
- Plugin your questions into Google Adwords Keyword Planner tool (separated by commas) to discover search volumes and competition.
- Google your questions using the Moz SEO Toolbar (for Chrome) to assess current search results comparing content and authority of top search results with your own site. Consider focusing on niche marketing first to become an authority on a smaller topic before going for a big authority topic.
